the fiscal cliff. with only three days to go, our next guest says it's not falling over the cliff we should be worried about, it's how much the landing is going to hurt. brian mcginnis is the head of the campaign to fix the debt, president of the committee for responsible budget and joins us this morning from washington. maya, good morning. what do you mean by that? what are you trying to say when you talk about the landing hurting the most? >> well, the point is that the fiscal cliff is a deadline and it's an important deadline that's there to help us focus on getting a big debt deal. the sad state of play is that it appears they're not going to be successful in that. they're not going to be able to replace the cliff with a big, comprehensive debt deal that's big enough to help fix the fiscal challenges of the country. but what's even additionally troubling now is that we may actually go over the cliff. and the fact that we are going to, because of partisan fighting, and an unwillingness to tackle these challenges, do something that is really going to harm the economy and harm all of us. i

was expected today. but there's a lot of trading concerns about the fiscal cliff. again, a lot of people are already on vacation this trading day ends at 1 p.m. today. so we only have a half day of trading, but the market is down and worries about the fiscal cliff and as we mentioned before, perhaps worries about impending strike with longshoremen along the east coast and the gulf coast, so we'll keep a sharp eye on that. let's check the price of oil, it's down as well today. off about 50 cents and it had been off 30 cents and continuing to go down again, perhaps because of concerns about a slowing economy, if in fact, we do go over the fiscal cliff. well, since the the horrific shooting in connecticut we've heard lots of ideas on how to keep our children safer, but what do the people really want? scott rasmussen joining us now with a look at his latest polls on these issues. scott, good to see you. in general, i imagine the move in favor of gun control is increasing, correct? >> it has. in fact. 47% say they want stricter gun control laws at the highest level of support we've ever seen.

over the fiscal cliff. happy new year. here's what you might have missed. president barack obama has left hawaii. he left last night, arriving in d.c. early this morning. the senate is also coming back from its christmas vacation to work on a deal today. sources tell us majority leader harry reid will be pushing a scaled back version of the fiscal cliff package that president obama laid out last week. it moved the tax hike needle to $400,000 per household. no word yet on when the house might come back with time ticking away. democrats are hoping that a scaled back plan could get through the house, senate and white house before that big ball drops on 2013. that would be sometime on december 30th or even on new years eve. we want to bring in jonathan allen. he's a senior national correspondent for politico. the top headline on politico is fiscal cliff deal increasingly unlikely. i think a lot of people are feeling that pessimism right now. what are you hearing? >> well, i think what you've got here, alena, is a nash equilibrium to borrow from economic theory and game theory. each of th
